H. D. Kaur is a British Indian writer who is currently working on her debut novel which draws on her lived experience of severe mental illness and hospitalisation.
She first began writing as an undergraduate when she took a Creative Writing module at the University of East Anglia. After completing a Literature MA at Sussex, she went to Hull to do a PhD in Cultural Theory, but her studies were interrupted by the onset of schizophrenia. Returning to writing has been a central part of her recovery. She has been the recipient of the Andrea Badenoch Award from New Writing North, the Laura Kinsella Fellowship from the National Centre for Writing, and the Bridge Emerging Writer Award from Moniack Mhor. In 2024, she was awarded an Arts Council England grant.
H. D. Kaur has held a range of voluntary and paid positions relating to mental health, including work with the Mental Health Research Network, work as an Expert by Experience with the Care Quality Commission, and her current part-time role as a National Advisor with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
